Social Media Recommendations

Social Media Recommendations for Pastors and Leaders

Purpose

To guide pastors and leaders in representing Christ, their church, and Open Bible East with integrity, wisdom, and accountability on social media.

General Conduct

  • Use social media as an extension of your ministry. Reflect Christ in tone, content, and attitude.

  • Assume everything posted is public and permanent, even if “private.”

  • Remember to represent Christ and your church with integrity, clarity, and grace.

  • Avoid divisive or hostile language that could harm your witness or the unity of the Body.

Content Guidelines

  • Post content that is edifying, truthful, and aligned with Biblical values.

  • Refrain from sharing or reposting unverified, misleading, or inflammatory content.

  • Avoid excessive self-promotion. Let your posts reflect the mission of Christ more than personal branding.

  • Do not post confidential church matters, counseling stories, or internal issues without proper permission.

  • Celebrate ministry wins, milestones, and encouragements that inspire and uplift.

Engagement and Tone

  • Engage with kindness, humility, and patience, especially in disagreement.

  • Avoid responding in anger or frustration. If needed, take time to pray before replying.

  • Do not argue theology or politics publicly in ways that damage relationships or reputation.

  • Maintain a pastoral tone, constructive, not combative.

  • Be cautious, as written communication can easily be misunderstood. Romans 14:16 -Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil;

Political and Cultural Issues

  • Speak to cultural issues with Biblical wisdom, not partisan rhetoric.

  • Remember: You are a Christ follower and shepherd before a commentator. (Remember the old saying, "What would Jesus do?" or, in this instance, "What would Jesus say?").

  • Be mindful of how your posts affect people of different backgrounds within your church and community.

Accountability and Boundaries

  • Invite accountability. Consider asking a trusted leader or spouse to review your social media presence periodically.

  • Set boundaries: Limit screen time, Sabbath from social media, and avoid late-night posting.

  • Guard your heart against comparison, envy, or digital distraction.

Photos and Media

  • Obtain permission before posting photos of others, especially minors.

  • Use discernment when posting photos of sensitive ministry settings (e.g., prayer, crisis response, altar moments).

Final Encouragement

  • Use social media to bring light, hope, and truth.

  • Let your online presence reflect your calling, faithful, joyful, and Christ-centered.

  • Use social media in a way that reflects Christ, protects unity, promotes truth, and upholds the integrity of your calling, church, and the greater Body of Christ.
